Gareth Southgate will decide on injured Jordan Henderson’s availability for the forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers on Monday with James Ward-Prowse poised to take his place.

And there was emerging doubt on Friday over the fitness of John Stones for the games against Czech Republic and Montenegro after his Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola indicated the central defender will not be available for international duty due to a groin injury.

England medics will liaise with their counterparts at Liverpool and City before deciding on whether the pair, who are central to Southgate’s plans, should report to St George’s Park on Monday before deciding on any withdrawals and replacements.

Henderson injured an ankle in Wednesday’s win at Bayern Munich, his club manager Jurgen Klopp indicating on Friday that he is unlikely to be fit for England’s double-header.

In-form Southampton midfielder Ward-Prowse missed out on the original squad, but has been watched by England staff in recent weeks and will be a serious contender to take Henderson’s position in the squad if the Liverpool captain drops out.

Competition for places in midfield is fierce. And with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain approaching full fitness, Southgate’s options will increase by the time the inaugural UEFA Nations League finals take place in June.

But Ward-Prowse will be hoping for an opportunity to impress the England boss during the next camp.

Meanwhile, Guardiola has made clear he does not want Stones to be considered for international duty next week.

‘He’s not ready, hopefully he will not go. He is not ready to play, he is injured,’ said the Spaniard.

‘There’s been no conversations with England. Maybe I will call, and maybe I will speak but I think the doctors are in touch.

‘Normally, in this kind of situation, I don’t speak with the managers, the doctors when there are problems, they are in touch.’

Southgate and his assistant Steve Holland will not attend any matches this weekend but will analyse footage of games including squad members.
