Dala, Elgar bowl Titans to big win at Kingsmead

Cape Town – Career-best figures by Junior Dala and Dean Elgar saw the Titans extend their lead at the top of the One-Day Cup standings with a convincing 70-run bonus-point win over the Dolphins in Durban on Friday.

There was also a 13th List A century from Heino Kuhn that helped the visitors amass 300 for nine after they lost the toss and were put into bat at Kingsmead.

The veteran right-hander smashed 107 off 98 balls (11 fours, 1 six) and was given good support by his captain, Heinrich Klaasen (51 off 54 balls, 1 four, 2 sixes), although the log-leaders might well have been disappointed not to have got more runs at the end.

But it mattered little as Dala then claimed five for 32 in 10 overs and Elgar grabbed four for 37 in 8.1 overs as the home side were bowled out for 230 with 11 balls remaining.

The result extended the Titans’ advantage at the summit to 10 points over the Warriors, while the Dolphins stayed in third spot ahead of their trip to the Knights on Sunday – the only match of the weekend.

And they were full value for the result after dominating almost throughout. They lost Diego Rosier, hero of the last game, for four early on, but Kuhn then played pillar with everyone batting around him.

Jonathan Vandiar and Elgar scored 34 and 26 respectively, before Kuhn fell with the score on 200.

At that stage, only 33.1 overs had elapsed and a total closer to 350 looked on the cards, but Senuran Muthusamy (3/55) helped pull them back as only Farhaan Behardien (38) managed to contribute significantly from the lower order.

It meant the Dolphins went to supper possibly the happier team and they came out well after the break with Sarel Erwee (29) helping Vaughn van Jaarsveld (52 of 59 balls, 6 fours) put on 55 for the first wicket.

Dala then ripped through the top order with his maiden five wicket haul that surpassed the four for 29 he took for the Titans against the Cape Cobras earlier in the season leaving the home side in a heap of trouble on 121 for five.

Top-scorer Sibonelo Makhanya tried his best with 55 off 66 balls (2 fours, 3 sixes), but he lacked support as the chase fizzled out – Elgar proving the key man towards the end with his best figures that beat the three for 43 he took for the Titans against the Dolphins back in 2014/15.
