Students protest against NIA summon to Mirwaiz, ban on Jama’at

Scores of students of Islamia College on Saturday took out a rally to protest against summoning of Hurriyat (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by National Investigation Agency (NIA) and, Ban on Jama’at-e-Islamia and crackdown on religious leaders.

Raising slogans, the students said Muslims in Kashmir, irrespective of their political ideologies, have a deep emotional and religious association with pulpit of Jamia Masjid and its head priest Mirwaiz. They said even Kashmiri Pandits and Sikhs have high regard for Mirwaiz.

Mirwaiz has been summoned by NIA for questioning in an alleged funding case. Demanding immediate end to “harassment” of leaders and revocation of ban on Jama’at, the students said urged international community to play their role in ensuring peaceful resolution to Kashmir dispute.

“We have been observing the recent developments. Our leaders are intimated on one pretext or other. We are here to protests against this. We stand by our leaders,” said one of the protestors.

Later, the protesters dispersed off peacefully.
