UFC: Max Holloway talks to commentators whilst beating up Calvin Kattar

‘I am the BEST boxer in the UFC!’: Max Holloway talks to commentators WHILE evading punches as former featherweight champion puts in one of the greatest UFC performances of all time in beat down of Calvin Kattar

  • Max Holloway comprehensively beat Calvin Kattar in the first UFC event of 2021
  • The former 145lbs king defeated the No 6 featherweight via unanimous decision
  • Holloway, 29, was so comfortable that he took to showboating in the fifth round
  • He told commentators he was the best boxer in the UFC while slipping punches
  • Holloway is available if Conor McGregor or Dustin Poirier pull out of UFC 257

Max Holloway put in a performance that few will top in 2021 as the former featherweight champion told commentators he was the best boxer in MMA while dodging punches from a badly beaten Calvin Kattar.

The Hawaii native, 29, opened proceedings for the UFC with one of the best displays ever seen in the octagon on Saturday night, beating No 6-ranked Kattar from pillar to post to cement his title credentials after his controversial loss to Alex Volkanovski last year.

The former 145-pound king landed 455 significant strikes over five rounds to Kattar’s 133, putting on a frenetic pace that very few can keep up with.

There were calls for the bout to be stopped in the fourth, such was the beating ‘Blessed’ put on his opponent, but Kattar came out for the fifth where Holloway took to showboating.

After landing a clean straight right, Holloway points at commentator and UFC legend Daniel Cormier octagon-side, before slipping a Kattar counter and screaming: ‘I’m the best boxer in the UFC baby!’

Holloway then lands a crisp jab while evading a flurry of Kattar strikes before repeating his claim again: ‘I’m the best boxer in the UFC!’

The 29-year-old was irked by comments made by his rival in the build up in which he claimed he had the superior striking skills between the pair.

‘I was having the time of my life,’ Holloway said after his unanimous decision victory. ‘I got to talk to DC (Daniel Cormier) a bit in there, let him know I’m coming for his job.

‘People were calling me out. I was once known as one of the better boxers in MMA and this guy was coming up and saying he was one of the best boxers.

‘As long as you can take it, I’m going to give it. As long as the ref lets you stay in there, I’m going to keep giving it… I was telling my coaches, I didn’t know I punched that much.’

Dustin Poirier is looking to avenge his loss to Conor McGregor

McGregor is bidding to reclaim his lightweight title

He is ready to step in if Dustin Poirier (L) or Conor McGregor (R) pull out of the main event

Holloway was handed victory by all three judges, who scored the contest 50-43, 50-43, 50-42. It is the second time a judge has scored a UFC fight 50-42, the first being in Rich Franklin’s victory over David Loiseau at UFC 58.

The fan-favourite also said he would be sticking around on Fight Island this week ahead of UFC 257, and that he is available to step up in the event that either Conor McGregor or Dustin Poirier pull out of the main event.

‘All I’ve got to say is there is a big, big fight next week – Dustin Poirier against Conor McGregor – and guess what, your boy is staying all the way through the week.

‘If anything happens, Dana [White, UFC president] knows my number and he can hit me up.’

Meanwhile, McGregor responded to Holloway’s boxing assertions, retweeting the viral clip saying: ‘lol’. The Irishman boxed Floyd Mayweather in a mega-fight in 2017.
