Barcelona need to tie up Eric Garcia deal ‘price £8.9m’ this month

Barcelona want to tie up Eric Garcia deal ‘worth £8.9m’ this month instead of waiting to sign him for free this summer… as cash-strapped giants aim to pay transfer fee later this year

  • Barcelona are looking to sign Eric Garcia in an £8.9million deal this month
  • Garcia could have signed for free this summer but Barca do not want to wait
  • The Camp Nou side are in financial difficulties and want to pay the fee later
  • Barca need Garcia with the likes of Gerard Pique struggling to return from injury

Barcelona are trying to push through a deal for Eric Garcia from Manchester City this month.

The 20-year old was expected to join Barca in the summer anyway when his contract at City runs out and he has already agreed terms on a five year deal with the Spanish club.

But Barcelona want to bolster their defensive options now and are trying to persuade City to let Garcia go even though they are unlikely to be able to pay the fee until later in the year.

The deal is said to be worth around £8.9million according to El Mundo Deportivo, with an initial fee of £4.45m due later this year along with another £4.45m in variables.

Such is Barca’s financial plight they are struggling to pay up front until their January 24 presidential election is resolved with Victor Font and Joan Laporte vying for the role.

Garcia, who has been recovering after testing positive for Covid, left Barca for City in 2017 and has been in contact with players from the Barcelona squad who are keen to hear when he will be returning.

Barca, who are seven points behind leaders Atletico Madrid in La Liga, need his presence with the likes of Gerard Pique fighting to recover from a knee ligament injury and coach Ronald Koeman under increasing pressure to keep his job.

The Catalan giants find themselves in an increasingly precarious financial situation, with their net debt approaching €1billion and €420m of that amount owed in the next 12 months.

Garcia rejected a contract extension from City last summer, with Pep Guardiola previously speaking of his hope to ‘seduce’ the centre-back into staying at the Etihad.

He was free to negotiate with other clubs from the start of this month, with his deal set to expire on 30 June.

The Barca youth product has long been targeted as a potential heir to Pique, and the talisman’s injury appears to have convinced Koeman of the urgent need to sign Garcia immediately.
