In April 2015, when I was clinging on as a first-class cricketer, Kent came up against Essex in the days when they were producing absolutely horrible pitches that suited the bowling of their overseas batsman, Jesse Ryder, and David Masters, who by then was approaching 40 and had got me out for fun for 15 years. This was no place to be a young batsman, but making his debut for Essex was a 17-year-old called Dan Lawrence. Later that summer, I commentated on an U19s game between England and Australia at Derby, in which he opened and scored the first of two brilliant centuries that series.
