- He wrote: ‘100% offence. 100% defence. Highest PPV. Highest gate’, in tweet
- Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal also reportedly achieved 1.3m buys this year
His 40-second TKO win over Donald Cerrone back in January achieved 1.353million buys, according to the document shared by McGregor on social media.
The Irishman wrote: ‘Congrats to the UFC on a well fought 2020! The only sporting company on the planet to come through the entire year. Incredible!
Conor McGregor is claiming the biggest UFC PPV of the year for the Donald Cerrone fight
‘I am honored to secure their highest PPV of the year with McGregor vs. Cerrone. Congrats Donald and also on his double submission win last night.’
He also added: ‘100% offence. 100% defence. Highest PPV. Highest gate. Fastest Main Event KO of the year. 2020. 40 seconds. Roll on 2021!’
McGregor vs Cerrone was first reported to have brought in one million pay-per-view buys so the figures touted by the victor are a large jump.
The subscription fee to watch the fight was around $65 (£48), meaning if McGregor is right, £64.94m would have been raised from subscriptions alone.
In turn, a little over £1.6m per second would have been made before McGregor defeated Cerrone with his rapid TKO in Las Vegas at UFC 246.
It remains to be seen if that fight did in fact top the charts for the UFC as their best seller this year.
McGregor said ‘roll on 2021’ and will be fighting in January once again against Dustin Poirier
TOP UFC PAY-PER-VIEW CARDS IN 2020:
Conor McGregor vs Donald Cerrone – 1.353million buys
Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal – 1.3million buys
Israel Adesanya vs Paulo Costa – 700,000 buys
Justin Gaethje vs Tony Ferguson – 700,000 buys
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Justin Gaethje – 675,000 buys
Kamaru Usman’s showdown with Jorge Masvidal for the welterweight title in Abu Dhabi was also said to have 1.3m buys, although the official figures have not been released by the UFC.
Because it is a private company, there is no obligation for them to release the statistics from this year.
McGregor had hoped to fight more than once this year but became frustrated at the lack of activity, retiring for a third time and sharing private conversations with Dana White on Twitter.
But he will be returning on January 23 for a rematch with Dustin Poirier which will no doubt lure in a significant number of pay-per-view buys once again.
