More tension in the Real Madrid ranks? Karim Benzema’s agent tears into Raphael Varane as he says he’s ‘been a shadow of himself’ since Manchester City horror show three months ago – and after his laughable own goal

  • Real Madrid suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat against Valencia on Sunday
  • Raphael Varane scored own goal, and other three defenders gave away penalties
  • Karim Benzema’s agent slammed fellow Frenchman Varane on social media
  • There is plenty of tension in the ranks as Real continue rocky start to the season

Raphael Varane has come under heavy criticism from the agent of Karim Benzema as the tension continues to rise behind the scenes at Real Madrid.

Los Blancos were on the end of a heavy defeat by Valencia on Sunday night, despite the opposition themselves enduring a horrific start to the season.

At the heart of their abject display was defender Raphael Varane, who scored an embarrassing own goal to add to his underwhelming performances of the last few months.

One of his critics on social media was the agent of his team-mate Benzema, who said: ‘Since the Manchester City game, he has been a shadow of himself.’

Back in August, Varane made two woeful errors leading to goals in the Champions League against Manchester City as Real crashed out of the competition.

Benzema himself has also not held back from criticism of his team-mates in recent weeks as the team continue through a very rocky start to the campaign.

The French striker was caught on camera at the end of October laying into Vinicius Jr in the tunnel.

In the clip, filmed at half-time of the game away at Borussia Monchengladbach, Benzema allegedly says to Ferland Mendy of Vinicius: ‘Don’t play with him. On my mother’s life, he’s playing against us!’

In the days since, the pair have reportedly held clear-the-air talks but all does not seem well behind the scenes – and now comments from Benzema’s agent threaten to rock the boat even further.

The 4-1 defeat by Valencia on Sunday night was a game to forget for each of Real Madrid’s defenders, with Varane scoring his own goal and the other three – Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and Lucas Vazquez – all giving away penalties.

After the game, boss Zinedine Zidane said ‘we did everything wrong’ as he laid into his team’s worrying performance at the Mestalla.

It was the side’s heaviest LaLiga defeat in over two years, and it leaves them lagging down in fourth place.

In the Champions League, things have been difficult too, with Zidane’s men having lost to Shakhtar Donetsk and only just squeezed a draw out of Borussia Monchengladbach.

Their defensive struggles have perhaps made the need for Ramos to sign a new contract even greater, as the club continue to negotiate with their legendary captain.

Although no deal has yet been agreed, there is a willingness from both sides to get it done ahead of him becoming a free agent in the summer.
