The news was reported during the half-time coverage of Manchester City’s game against Arsenal, from beIn Sports.

Presenter Richard Keys said: ‘The information we are receiving is that he’s done his anterior cruciate ligament and if that is the case – well I say he’s done, with the incident with Jordan Pickford – and he will miss seven to eight months if that is the case.’

It has been reported that following the game Van Dijk was taken to the hospital for a scan on his knee along with midfielder Thiago.

The Spaniard who made his first start since joining from Bayern Munich, was on the end of a brutal challenge from Richarlison, who unlike Pickford, was sent off for his dangerous tackle.

It is not yet been reported as to the extent of Thiago’s injury, but the midfielder also complained about his knee.

Van Dijk’s potential ACL injury would be a huge blow to Liverpool’s chances of retaining the Premier League.

It would leave Jurgen Klopp’s side with just two senior centre-backs in Joe Gomez and Joel Matip – who both have had their fair share of injury problems in recent seasons.

Liverpool also have midfielder Fabinho who has been played in defence on a number of occasions including the recent 2-0 win over Chelsea.
