Laura Muir believes a 1500m gold medal is still a possibility despite the revelation she suffered a serious calf tear two months ago.

Mystery has surrounded the extent of the injury she suffered while racing in London in July, but her coach Andy Young confirmed yesterday it was a ‘proper tear’.

That has necessitated a six-week period of water-based training rather than track, and while Muir admitted her preparations have been affected, she insisted gold was still in reach.

Speaking ahead of the 1500m heats on Wednesday, she said: ‘The calf is 100 per cent now so I’m not worried about that at all. I can go into the competition being confident in that and my body, but it’s not been the most ideal preparation over these past couple of months.

‘To win a medal now, especially gold, would be an even bigger achievement than what it was a few months ago. That’s definitely still on the table.

‘Going into this year I said I wanted to win a medal in Doha. That’s always been my target and I think I am still capable of doing that.’
