San Francisco 49ers 20-31 Kansas Town Chiefs: Damien Williams rankings two overdue touchdowns

The Kansas City Chiefs edged a thrilling, topsy-turvy Super Bowl, holding their nerve as the San Francisco 49ers lost theirs.

Once again coming from behind, Patrick Mahomes led his side back from a seemingly insurmountable deficit in a 31-20 win.

At 20-10, it looked over. Mahomes had been harassed and bullied by Nick Bosa as the 49ers’ defense imposed their will. With the game tied at 10-10 at half-time, San Francisco had clicked into gear, throwing and running their way to 17 consecutive points.

But then, like the greats do, Mahomes took over.

With three swift drives of 2min 40sec, 2min 26 sec and 13 seconds, the Chiefs scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to seal another remarkable comeback in the postseason.

It means a first Super Bowl win for Andy Reid, ending any debate about his inclusion in the Hall of Fame. It also seals a second Super Bowl for this proud franchise, who made their first appearance in the game for half a century.

But, as with three years ago, large question marks hang over Kyle Shanahan and his ability to win the big game. With Atlanta in Super Bowl LI, his side were toppled when leading 28-3. And here, seemingly in complete control, the 49ers saw a potential sixth Super Bowl slip through their fingers.

As has been their wont in the playoffs, the Chiefs started slowly. A nervy opening possession ended quickly, Mahomes unable to convert from short distances.

San Francisco were in no mood to reciprocate. Bullying the Chiefs on the ground, Samuel added a substantial gain after threatening to go all the way. But when it mattered, the Chiefs put extra men in the box and the 49ers settled for a field goal, Robbie Gould scoring his first points in a Super Bowl since 2007.

San Francisco have been dominant on defense all season, the front four closing the pocket, backed up a strong linebacker corps.

The one thing Mahomes does not need is time and all the nerves of the opening drive were eliminated as the Chiefs marched up the field. Williams pounded up the field as all of San Francisco’s hallmarks were steadily erased.

On 4th and one, Williams put the Chiefs within a yard and Mahomes did the rest. He made the 49ers bite, weaving and wobbling but the pressure never came. Unchallenged, he waltzed over from a yard. In his first Super Bowl he took 7minutes and 26seconds to score.

The place exploded.

If that was clinical from Mahomes, Garoppolo was charitable. Under no pressure, his aimless pass was collected by Breeland. He joined Colin Kaepernick as the only 49ers quarterbacks to throw an interception in the Super Bowl.

It threatened to open the door for Kansas City, but they were made to settle for a 31-yard field goal.

Despite breathtaking plays from Williams and a fine catch from Sammy Watkins and another conversion on fourth and one, San Francisco’s defense woke from its slumber. Bosa regularly bullied left tackle Eric Fisher as the 49ers defense resembled their normal selves.

And after Harrison Butker put the Chiefs 10-3 up, the 49ers’ offense clicked too.

Six consecutive first downs, sealed by four runs and then two passes levelled the game. The last found Kyle Juszczyk, who scored with his first touch of the postseason. In doing so, he became the first fullback to score a touchdown in a Super Bowl since Mike Alstott in 2003. It was an important response from Garoppolo. 10-10. Breathless.

The Chiefs yielded possession with their second three and out, and the 49ers failed to add to the score after Shanahan peculiarly let the clock run down. A large gain from Kittle was wiped out by a flag for a push-off that few saw in the stadium, let alone around the world.

The Chiefs had dominated the clock with 17minutes and 13 seconds of possession. but nothing separated the sides. For the fourth time in history, a Super Bowl was tied at half-time.

It wasn’t for much longer. The 49ers put together a clinical, pass-heavy drive. Putting his trust in Garoppolo, Shanahan’s playbook used Sanders, Juszczyk and Kittle. But the Chiefs knuckled down, agains holding the 49ers to a field goal, Gould knocking through from 42-yards.

The tennis match continued. But, as with their opening drive, it was nervy from Mahomes. He dodged a collapsing pocket, skipping to his right to seal the first of two completions to Watkins.

But Bosa bull-rushed down the middle to strip sack Mahomes and worse was to come with Fred Warner intercepting on the following play.

If 49ers fans had been quiet, they came to life.

More passing from Garoppolo – among them to Kendrick Bourne – plus another reception for Juszczyk, stopped just before the line.

Mostert did the rest. His touchdown from a yard opened up a ten-point lead.

The Chiefs had come from behind in the playoffs before, but this was pushing things.

The ensuing possession began in shaky style. Now in survival mode and on his own 30, Mahomes scrambled to his right, skipping past the outstretched Bosa to grab an early first down. Kelce, his favourite outlet, twice proved a safe pair of hands. But after DeForest Buckner added a sack, the third of the game, it looked all-but over.

His pass to Hill bobbled out of the receiver’s hands and into those of the grateful Tarvarius Moore.

But a three and out from the 49ers gave the Chiefs a glimmer of hope. Mahomes took it, finding Hill with the longest pass of the day, a glorious 44-yard bomb. And after Moore was flagged for a pass interference call, the gap was narrowed to three points. Mahomes finding a wide open Kelce in the end zone.

Sport is decided on such shifts and after Chris Jones deflected Garoppolo’s pass to set up a third down, the Chiefs held firm. The 49ers punted, and Mahomes did not look back.

Fining a wide-open Watkins for another large gain, the volume went up to eleven with the Chiefs perched deep in the red zone.

It got louder after Williams regained the lead, collecting Mahomes’ looped pass to puncture the end zone, a decision upheld by a review.

Garoppolo failed to move the 49ers in the ensuing possession and it was to get worse, Williams going over for his second score of the game. Pandemonium.

And any doubt was erased as the Chiefs capped the win with Garoppolo intercepted for a second time.
